The discussions above, chosen at random, underscore the same fact: that in a significant number of instances, perhaps even typically, the plain meaning of the sacred history narrated in the Pentateuch cannot be established.

All of the discussions are incomplete. Many of the concerns all of them contain have not been noted. And only five short historical events, or short sections of them, have been discussed. A comprehensive survey of all of the similar concerns in all of the sacred history narrated in the Pentateuch would require an enormous work.

Such a work would corroborate the fact central to the present study: that in a significant number of instances, perhaps even typically, the language in which the sacred history in the Pentateuch is narrated precludes understanding of its plain meaning.

That fact must, in the opinion of the present study, be the indispensable beginning of traditionalist understanding, not only of sacred history, but also of the other major component of the Pentateuch, its codex. That is to say, the fact indispensable to discussion of sacred history in the Pentateuch is indispensable also to the study of law in the Pentateuch; therefore traditionalists must begin studying the codex by affirming that the language in which laws are mandated often, perhaps even typically, precludes understanding of what is mandated.

The necessity of that affirmation established, the present study discusses the response to the fact central to it that traditionalism necessitates, and why a counter-response derived from a view of reality antithetical to traditionalism should be considered with caution, especially as regards the futility of studying a specific set of laws, to be discussed.
